Leadership Principles (16 LPs) + Bar Raiser Loop Interview

Interview Format

Online Assessment

Aptitude test + LP-based survey (Amazonian personality questions). Filtered before phone screens.

Phone Screen (1โ€“2)

30โ€“45 minute LP-focused interview. Typically 2 LP questions with deep STAR probing. No case or coding at MBA level.

Loop Interview (4โ€“6 rounds, Superday)

Each interviewer owns specific LPs to probe. One interviewer is the Bar Raiser โ€” an external calibrator who makes the final call. All interviews are behavioral (MBA/PM level). No repeat stories across rounds.

What They Actually Test

  • โ†’16 Leadership Principles โ€” each LP is a scored dimension. Expect 2โ€“3 LP questions per interviewer.
  • โ†’STAR structure โ€” Situation, Task, Action, Result. Amazon scores: specificity of action, measurability of result, scale of impact.
  • โ†’Ownership mindset โ€” did you do more than your job required? Did you take accountability for failures?
  • โ†’Customer Obsession โ€” can you trace every decision back to a customer impact?
  • โ†’Invent & Simplify โ€” did you find a simpler, smarter way to solve the problem?

Real-Style Sample Questions

LP: Ownership

Tell me about a time you took on a responsibility that was clearly outside your job description. Why did you do it, and what happened?

LP: Customer Obsession

Describe a time when you pushed back on a stakeholder's request because you believed it wasn't in the customer's best interest.

LP: Invent & Simplify

Walk me through a process you simplified. What was the complexity before, what was the solution, and what did it save?

LP: Bias for Action

Give me an example of a time you made a consequential decision with limited information. What was your reasoning?

LP: Have Backbone

Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager or a senior leader. How did you handle it, and what was the outcome?

LP: Deliver Results

Describe a time when you had multiple competing priorities and had to make trade-offs to hit a critical deadline.

Scoring Philosophy

Amazon uses a 'Raise the Bar' or 'Not Hire' binary per interviewer, plus a Bar Raiser veto. They score: specificity (generic answers fail โ€” give exact numbers, dates, team sizes), personal ownership (say 'I', not 'we' โ€” the team's actions are irrelevant), recency (stories from the last 18 months preferred), and result magnitude. Failing even one LP category usually means rejection.

Insider Tips

๐Ÿ’ก

Prepare 12โ€“15 STAR stories, each mapped to 2โ€“3 LPs. Tag each story so you can pull it by LP during the interview.

๐Ÿ’ก

Quantify every result: '... which reduced processing time by 40%, saving the team 8 hours/week and generating โ‚น15 lakh in annual savings.'

๐Ÿ’ก

Never use 'we' without immediately pivoting to 'my specific action was...' โ€” Amazon scores on your personal contribution only.

๐Ÿ’ก

At the end of each answer, add a 'lessons learned' sentence โ€” this shows Ownership and Learn & Be Curious in one move.

๐Ÿ’ก

Ask your interviewers which LPs they most look for. They'll often tell you โ€” and you can emphasise those dimensions in remaining rounds.
