Bain & Company

Case Interview + Fit Interview (EGL Method)

Interview Format

Case Interview (2โ€“3 rounds)

Mix of candidate-led and interviewer-led cases. Bain cases tend to be more realistic business scenarios with a strong focus on recommendations, not just analysis.

Fit Interview (EGL Framework)

Bain uniquely structures its fit interview around Experience, Goal, Leadership (EGL). Every story should hit all three dimensions.

Written Case (Final round, some offices)

Candidate given a case brief to read and present recommendations. Emphasis on clear logic over detailed analysis.

What They Actually Test

  • โ†’Insight quality โ€” do you find the one thing that changes the recommendation?
  • โ†’Leadership maturity โ€” EGL scores your experience level, goal orientation, and people leadership
  • โ†’Precision in language โ€” Bain values concise, confident language. No hedging.
  • โ†’Analytical rigour โ€” can you size a market or build a cost breakdown from scratch?
  • โ†’Cultural fit โ€” Bain is the most 'people-first' of MBB. They want warmth + sharpness.

Real-Style Sample Questions

Case

A global fashion retailer is considering entering India. Should they? If so, through what model โ€” own retail, e-commerce, or franchise?

EGL

Walk me through a time you led a team through a difficult situation. What was the goal, what did you do, and what happened?

EGL

Describe a situation where you had to influence without authority to achieve an important goal.

EGL

Give me an example of a time you made a decision with incomplete information. How did you decide, and how did it turn out?

Scoring Philosophy

Bain evaluates: Answer First (do you lead with a point of view?), structured reasoning (logical flow, MECE), and EGL completeness for fit stories. They're more lenient on math errors than McKinsey but stricter on narrative quality and confidence. 'Bain bar' is defined by clarity + warmth + sharpness together.

Insider Tips

๐Ÿ’ก

Use the EGL structure explicitly for fit stories: 'My experience was X, my goal was Y, and here's the leadership action I took.' Bain recruiters literally score on all three.

๐Ÿ’ก

Answer first: always lead with your recommendation, then support it. 'I'd recommend Option A, and here's why...' โ€” never save the conclusion for the end.

๐Ÿ’ก

Bain cases often have a 'twist' โ€” new information midway through that changes the recommendation. Stay open to pivoting your answer.

๐Ÿ’ก

Bain is the warmest of MBB culturally. Show genuine curiosity, ask good questions at the end, and be personable โ€” they are evaluating fit actively.
