Fellowship and grad-school panels assess intellectual depth, motivation, and fit with a mission or lab. They will have read your written materials closely and will probe them. Your job is to defend your story with substance and to show you're the kind of person the program exists to develop. This guide covers the statement, the pitch, and the panel.
Own your statement of purpose
- •Assume the panel has read it line by line — every claim is fair game.
- •Be ready to expand on any experience, motivation, or goal you mentioned, with specifics.
- •Reconcile your past, present interest, and future plan into one coherent arc.
- •Know why this program and this fellowship specifically — connect to its mission, faculty, or values.
Pitch your research or project
The problemWhat question or gap are you addressing, and why does it matter?
Your approachHow you'd investigate or have investigated it — methods and reasoning.
So whatThe potential impact or contribution, honestly scoped.
FitWhy this program, advisor, or country is the right place to pursue it.
💡 Be able to explain your work to a smart non-specialist. Panels often include people outside your exact field — clarity signals mastery.
Panel questions and motivation
- •Expect 'why you', 'why now', and 'what will you do afterward' — have honest, specific answers.
- •For mission-driven fellowships, show genuine commitment to the cause, backed by what you've actually done.
- •It's fine to say 'I don't know' to a probing question, then reason through it aloud.
- •Prepare thoughtful questions for the panel; intellectual curiosity is part of what's assessed.
