MBA Admissions Interview: Why-MBA, Goals & Fit
The narrative that ties your past, the MBA, and your goals into one believable story.
The MBA interview is a coherence test. Admissions committees are checking whether your past, your stated goals, and this specific program line up into a believable story โ and whether you're self-aware and mature. A polished 'why MBA' anchors everything; vague or inconsistent answers get probed until they crack.
The why-MBA + goals story
Profile and resume questions
- โขEvery line of your resume and application is fair game โ know your own story deeply.
- โขBe ready to explain career switches, gaps, and grades honestly and without defensiveness.
- โขHave two or three achievement stories in STAR, with real numbers.
School fit and current awareness
- โขWhy this school: reference specific programs, clubs, faculty, or the cohort โ not the ranking.
- โขBe current on business and the economy; prepare balanced views on three or four topics.
- โขFor Indian B-schools, expect academic and domain questions from your background too.
GD, PI, and WAT (Indian B-schools)
Many Indian programs run a Group Discussion and Written Ability Test alongside the personal interview. In the GD, contribute substance early, build on others, and never dominate. In the WAT, structure a clear argument in the time given. Composure and clarity beat aggression in both.
